Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) is a new approach for reducing cellulite. Cellulite gives the skin an “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” appearance. Bumpy skin caused by cellulite is a major cosmetic concern, primarily for women. Acoustic Wave Therapy is a painless and non-invasive procedure that produces smoother skin for all those who are conscious about the cellulite deposits on their thighs, buttocks, and stomach. Acoustic Wave Therapy makes use of acoustic pulses or pressure waves to treat cellulite.

The fibrous layer of connective tissue under the skin becomes tough and inelastic with time. It pulls down the skin causing unsightly dimpling. Acoustic Wave Therapy targets this fibrous layer and breaks it down using pressure waves. At the same time it increases the thickness of the dermis, which is the second layer of skin. Acoustic Wave Therapy also improves blood circulation and collagen production. The result is smoother, firmer skin with a marked reduction in the appearance of cellulite.

Acoustic Wave Therapy is carried out using either a radial head or a planar head. A radial head device consists of a pellet in an air chamber. This device builds a slow and strong pressure wave. The patient feels the sensation of a powerful vibration when the device is applied to the skin. A radial head device stimulates nerves, increases blood flow to the treated area, and increases collagen production. A planar head makes use of an electromagnet to generate acoustic waves. This treatment procedure is nearly painless. High energy acoustic pressure waves break up fat and promote growth of dermal collagen.

An acoustic wave therapy session lasts for approximately thirty minutes. You will be able to notice the results after three or four treatment sessions. Treatments usually follow a cycle of 1-2 sessions a week for around 6-8 weeks. The results last for up to three months. A follow-up session is recommended every three months. Best results with acoustic wave therapy are achieved if you can maintain your weight and follow a moderate exercise routine.
